42.White to move

In the position above White has an advantage by one pawn. The question is

a)From your point of view is it enough for White to use this advantage and lead to victory?

Correct again Eugene and Albin problem 41 is a draw.1...Nc6 is the key move to problem 41.Its obvious that Black cannot win with only one Knight. There's nothing White can do also to promote the pawn.

Selangor Open 2009 Photos

pic left : Khair vs Abdullah Che Hassan, besides him is NM Kamal vs Rizal.
pic right: Fadli vs Yeap Eng Chiam, next to fadli is Ismail Ahmad vs Sumant, while next to Ismail is IM Mas Hafizul vs Lim Zhuo Ren. It was interesting to watch Fadli in this game, though he lost to Eng Chiam, but he managed to play well.. even when his time was actually 2 min!

pic left: Aziz Shukor vs Gerald Soh
pic right: One of Paragames trainer trying his luck at Sel Open - Rizal Ahmad Kamal vs Justin Ong. He missed one move that could secure him victory.

pic left: i know playing black is Masrin Erowan, coming all the way from Sabah to play, his opponent however I cant recall-thousand apology! Thanks to albin, it is Abd Kadir Jalani... Now I remember..
pic right : Terengganu hero - Nor Ilhamuddin, vs also Terengganu hero in mssm last year- Shazwan.

pic left : cant really tell who's who in the pic - SORRY
pic right : the Otai from Sarawak - Lim Kian Hwa

pic left: Cikgu Baha from Kelantan vs Azman Hisham, next to him is Haslindah vs Fairul
pic right: trying to zoom in pic of Nabila - wearing red shirt.

The above pictures was taken on 2nd May 2009, I think this was round 7. This is not the best pictures I have taken... too blurry. I need to buy new camera someday. The canon that I am using is too old and outdated.

This year Selangor Open is very interesting and exciting event, as we can see upsets and many new faces managed to climb the ladder of victory and play on the top board. Classical games always full of uncertainty since anyone can take their time. The champs is Nicholas Chan, Second is Ian Udani, Third is Lim Yee Weng. 1st OKU Selection Training Photos

The above pictures were taken on 1st May 2009, during the OKU Selection Training at SM Pendidikan Khas Setapak. I am one of the Trainer for the coming Paragames KL09, so I was there giving training and watching the selection. Other trainers that were present during the selection was Cikgu Asmah, Head Coach En Latiff, and Abdul Haq. Other trainers will joined us later during another selection training.

The job as a trainer for OKU will be very challenging and exciting too, as I am experiencing a different method to reach out to the players. Obviously the method will not be the same like what I am teaching to my other students, but however I shall give it all out!

41.Black to move

In the position above Black has an advantage by one Knight. The question is

a)From your point of view is it enough for Black to use this advantage and lead to victory?

Thanks again to Albin and Eugene for your continuous support to solve problem given.Correct again that 1.Ba3 is the key move to solve problem 40.This move threatens mate in by 1....Rxb1 2.Qh6+! Kxh6 3.Bf8+ Kg5/Kh5 5. Be2 mate.

National Closed 2009

Once again the annually National Chess Championship will set to make its date on 30th May - 3rd June 2009. This year it will be staged at DAT Chess Center, 4th Floor Car Park, Kompleks Wilayah Kuala Lumpur.

Who will be crowned this year champion? Since NM title was introduced in 1974, Malaysia has seen so many champions taking the NM title year after year, but only few did lift the Trophy more than once. The most state with the NM title is Pulau Pinang, but I am proud to say Pahang did lift the title through NM Kamal Ariffin Wahidduddin in 1991.

While NWM title was introduced in 1990, as I recall, the tourney was held at International Youth Centre in KL, it was a tough tourney back then when the favourite WIM Audrey Wong lost unexpectedly to second seeded Geraldine Johns Putra, but during the last round Geraldine lost her game, and before that drew with another player. So the first NWM went to WIM Audrey Wong at that time. However there are not many NWM title holder in Malaysia, as we have very few Ladies playing chess and challenging the games to a very exceptional level, but as years passed we seen many girls players are taking interest in Chess, and we may witness new NWM will be crowned in future years to come! Well, I am also proud to say Pahang too produced 2 NWM title holders in the 90s.

But who will be the National Champion this year? Will it be an unexpected result like last year? Or will it be players like Abdullah Che Hassan, or Ismail Ahmad whom almost closed to taste the title, Or perhaps the younger generation like Yeoh Li Tian, whose father was also a National Champs? We can only find out by wednesday 3rd June 2009! For the NWM title, my best bet will be Nur Nabila taking the champion, as at this moment she is consistently making her mark in the local chess scene, but still not forgetting players from Penang, Perak, Kedah who will try their best to steal the title from Nabila..

Below are the details of the National Closed, however if you find it difficult to read, kindly click link Malaysian Chess Federation :

39.White to move

In the position above it looks like it will ended with a draw .The question is

a)Do you agree that both side should satisfied with a draw or is it possible for either White or Black to win in this position?

Correct again Eugene and Albin white win in this position by 1.f7 h2 2.f8=Q h1=Q 3.Qf3+ Kg1 4.Qd1+ Kg2 5.Qe2+ Kg1 6.Kg3 and mate is inevitable

38.White to move

In the position above it looks like an equal position for both side .The question is

a)Is it possible for either White or Black to win in this position?

Thanks again to Mr....,Eugene,Kumara and Albin for sharing your thought to solve problem 37 and correct Black win by 1.Ra6+ Kf7 2. Ra5 f4 3. Ra7+ Ke6 4. Ra6+ Kd5 5. Ra5+ Kc4 6. Ra8 f3+ 7. Kf2 Rh1 8. Rc8+ Kd5 9. Rd8+ Kc6 10. Ra8 a1=Q.The key move is push the f pawn. White has no choice but to move only on f2 to stop the advanced of the f pawn.Black rook now can move to h1 and white is in dilemma and will lose a rook.

MASUM 2009

Better late than never... :-) i know there are some viewers were expecting me updating the results of MASUM soonest after rounds ended, but the truth I am busy analysing games and sms-ing with my students... imagine me being here and them over at UUM.. trying hard to motivate the players especially the ladies, since this is their first major event! Sometimes I cant even concentrate on my job at the office coz, I guess my heart flew away to UUM to be with them.. but my body remains at the Office to do the job... kinda hard to live like this.. so, I decided, if I were given the opportunity to coach UMP again.. I am sure to get my leave from work and be with the students... hahaha.. maybe when that time comes my students wont have any excuses left for playing bad :-))

Thanks to NM Zarul Shazwan for replacing me to motivate the players not to mention gave them a thing or two there.. Thanks!

Before I gave the results of MASUM, juz want to say to the team, you guys did the best you can during the time, in which I knew you could have done better, but I never expected you guys to achieved what you have achieved along the way! Most of you did improves a lot and you listen well during training, so I am proud of it! The Men's team, congrats to NM Zarul for winning the first board prize. To Chai Soon you did great! to Hafrez and Daus you guys contribute too!

Congrats to Ayu for winning the third board prize, to Farhana, you did great too for not losing a single game, though you lost on tie break for the second board prize.. to Leya and Atirah you guys fought well.. who would have thought these two "bidan terjun" could actually contribute and play as a team. I thought these ladies from zero, and for them to win big and sharing second place position before the final rounds is something that was surprising.

Honestly, I wasnt actually hoping for any medals, but as a trainer, I juz wanted better play from the students!

35.White to move

In the position above White has an advantage by one pawn. The question is

a)From your point of view is it enough for white to use this advantage and lead to victory?

Thanks again to Mr..... and albin for solving problem 34 by 1. Qc3 attacking Black Knight on d4 and Rook on e1.Black is hopeless because when the Knight that guard vital Square move mate is unavoided .

34.White to Play And Mate in Two Moves

Thanks again to Mr..... and albin for solving problem 33 by 1.Qh6 gxf6(1...gxh6) 2.Ng4 and Black could not prevent mate on h7 or h6
