MASUM 2009

Better late than never... :-) i know there are some viewers were expecting me updating the results of MASUM soonest after rounds ended, but the truth I am busy analysing games and sms-ing with my students... imagine me being here and them over at UUM.. trying hard to motivate the players especially the ladies, since this is their first major event! Sometimes I cant even concentrate on my job at the office coz, I guess my heart flew away to UUM to be with them.. but my body remains at the Office to do the job... kinda hard to live like this.. so, I decided, if I were given the opportunity to coach UMP again.. I am sure to get my leave from work and be with the students... hahaha.. maybe when that time comes my students wont have any excuses left for playing bad :-))

Thanks to NM Zarul Shazwan for replacing me to motivate the players not to mention gave them a thing or two there.. Thanks!

Before I gave the results of MASUM, juz want to say to the team, you guys did the best you can during the time, in which I knew you could have done better, but I never expected you guys to achieved what you have achieved along the way! Most of you did improves a lot and you listen well during training, so I am proud of it! The Men's team, congrats to NM Zarul for winning the first board prize. To Chai Soon you did great! to Hafrez and Daus you guys contribute too!

Congrats to Ayu for winning the third board prize, to Farhana, you did great too for not losing a single game, though you lost on tie break for the second board prize.. to Leya and Atirah you guys fought well.. who would have thought these two "bidan terjun" could actually contribute and play as a team. I thought these ladies from zero, and for them to win big and sharing second place position before the final rounds is something that was surprising.

Honestly, I wasnt actually hoping for any medals, but as a trainer, I juz wanted better play from the students!

MASUM 2009

Karnival sukan Universiti in on once again this year, and chess is one of the sports contested. 2 golds, 2 silvers and 2 bronze are up for grabs for both mens and womens chess team in deciding who is the top three best universities in chess arena beginning from 17th May - 20th May at Dewan Pusat Kegiatan Pelajar at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Sintok, Kedah!

last year at Sabah, the game had been play via individual rounds and it was won by Gerald Soh from UM. This year the game in turn becomes a team event again, so the best team shall decide the course of the game!

Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) too is not left out in the excitement of the game same like any other university, we had our Latihan Pusat training from 7th May to 12th May at Pusat Sukan UMP. On the 12th at 10pm the chess team headed to UUM without the coach (now I feel sad for not being able to be with them).

Though I am not at UUM to watch over the players but I juz wanted them to know, that all prayers goes to the team. As much as I wanted juz any colour of the medals but the most important thing as a trainer all I ever wanted for the players, to play at their best despite winning or losing! I juz wanted them to be proud of what they have become before and after the training.

Though for the first time UMP is sending both men and women's team to the games but we are without any reserve players. So, our strategy is basically on the individual strength as we placed the players accordingly to level of strength of our future opponents. Most of the players are playing in their first MASUM except for our hope NM Zarul Shazwan. But I do hope some improvements can be seen at MASUM.

In the Mens' Team, there are 14 teams taking part, being UMP placed as seeded 7th - first round UMP are up against the host, UUM. The score : UMP 2.5 - UUM 1.5. Second round, UPM vs UMP, I thought we could have another win, but UPM managed to level the game and the result was a draw 2-2.

Some improvements were seen in the games of our board 4 players : Yu Chai Soon. However I have yet to see the improvements from other players likes Hafrez and firdaus.

In the Womens' Team, there are 12 teams taking part, being UMP seeded 9th overall. First round : UTM vs UMP we lost with a 2.5-1.5 margin. With our first and fourth board losing their game. Second round : UMP vs UPM, we lost again with a margin of 1-3. With only board 2 winning her game and the rest lost theirs.

Though I should not expect much from the ladies since this is their first tourney and first time experiencing such a big event, but i have my high hopes that these players can perform better, coz what they are playing are not at the real potential that I predict they would be.

There are still more rounds to go, focus guys!

30.White to move

In the position above as you can see White can capture Black pawn on e6.The question is

a)Is it necessary for white to make the first move by 1.Qxe6+/Nxe6 or is there a better option for white to move?

Thanks again Kumara and Mr...... for solving problem 29 by 1.Neg5 fxg5 2.Rxd7 Bf6 white has an advantage by a pair of rook compare to one rook for Black (2.....Qxd7 is a disaster for black because the Queen will fall by 3.Nxe5 Qe8 4.Nf7+ Kg5 5.Nd6+

5th Paragames KL09

Paragames is a competition for all OKU athletes of various sports. It is held right after after the SEA games. Last year it was held at Korat Thailand, but this year since Laos doesnt has the facilities to hold the event, Malaysia will be the host for the event that will be held in KL from 12 - 20 August 2009.

Chess is one of the sports too, but the chess tournament due for 15 - 19 August 2009 for the 16 Golds offered in B1 (total Blind or visual impaired) B2/B3 (partial Blind) combined B1,B2 and B3 and physical handicap men and women.

In Korat Malaysia won 2 Golds from the Ladies Team and individual gold, so this year Majlis Sukan Negara expect more golds from Chess. Currently Chess is under category B, but if more gold were added this year, Chess will be under category A, which means more benefit for the players.

The incentives for the golds are as good as the normal athletes taking part in the SEA Games which is RM5000 for every gold medals delivers! (for your info Chess is also part of the SEA Games in the year 2001 at Vietnam, 2003 at Manila, and 2005 at Singapore, and we won Bronze medals too in the Games, but it is not held in Korat since Thailand is not a force in chess at the ASEAN region, hope next 2 years when Indonesia is a host we shall see Chess in the Map again!)

This year the coaches will face a very difficult challenges coz most players are very new to chess, but the coaches will definitely are trying their best so that the target of 4 golds set by the Head Coach En Latif Mohamad will be a dream come true!

2nd Round DATCC chess League on 29th April 2009

I took half day leave to take part in the DATCC league, and got straight home by bus at night juz right after the game ended.. Crazy me huh!? Since I was too busy with the income tax month in april, I forgot to bring my camera to KL.. Aduish!!!!

As I expected my team is playing against Nusa Mahkota team on table 4, and my assumption that Hairulov will be playing is correct too! Last night game is a battle between bloggers!!! hahaha.. it was a very interesting game, I planned it to be that way, but I ended it pretty bad, i cant seem to find the finishing touch to the game, so, I lost! I am sad though that I lost the game ( I mean really sad since the team got thrashed really bad by our opponents) but credit to Hairul who fought well!

Also saw players whom were absent last week took part last night, including Lim Yee Weng, Mohd Irman, Mohd Khair, etc...

I will be in KL again tomorrow for the Paralimpik Selection Games held at Sek Men Pendidikan Khas Setapak, hope I remember to bring my camera this time.

Full reports and results of both DATCC Chess League and the Paralimpik Selection will be posted once I am back in Kuantan.

Pairing Round 2 of DATCC Chess League

Here is the latest info that I received regarding the Second Round Pairing of DATCC Chess League

Table 1 : GOLD IS Bhd vs PriceWaterhouseCoopers
Table 2 : Tan & Tan vs 786 Chess Club
Table 3 : SMS Gold vs SPAWN 2009
Table 4 : DAT Chess Centre vs MBS KL
Table 5 : Nusa Mahkota Chess Club vs PCWM Terang Bersih

My personal thoughts :

It will be an interesting Match since IM Lim Yee Weng is rumour to be playing, so GOLD IS will field strongest line up! But I also heard IM Mas may not be playing in the second round. The upset that Hazril Husin made against Kamaludin Yusof will make his next game against IM Jimmy or Abdullah Che Hassan is a moment to watch!

Cant wait to find out who will play as board 3 & 4 of the Tan & Tan team, coz, rumours is said that 786 will field up players that were absent last wednesday.

The battle for table 3 is a match of friends! If SMS Gold wants a decisive match the strongest line up of FM Ooi and FM Mok will be of certain!

I have no comment of DATCC and MBS KL, but I think DATCC will win this one!

PCWM still have not yet decided who shall play against Nusa Mahkota. My bet will be Hairul will play in the second round! If I am next in the ladies line maybe I shall play against Hairul - battle of bloggers! (hehehe)
